Calls on Congress to reject legislation that bears striking similarities to the EU’s Digital Markets Act and would deliver the same devastating results: harming consumers and small businesses while undermining overall economic competitiveness
Washington D.C. – Today, Gentry Collins, CEO of the American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce (AmFree Chamber), issued the following statement after a coalition of U.S. Senators, including U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Cory Booker (D-NJ), introduced the latest version of the American Innovation and Choice Online Act:
“The latest iteration of the American Innovation and Choice Online Act bears striking similarities to the EU’s Digital Markets Act and would deliver the same devastating results: harming consumers and small businesses while undermining overall economic competitiveness. American lawmakers, especially those that hold themselves out as champions of free enterprise, should reject this misguided attempt to import failed EU-style regulation that punishes success rather than fostering innovation. Beyond targeting some of America’s leading success stories, the legislation would create downstream harm for the countless small businesses that rely on these platforms, resulting in higher costs and degraded services for entrepreneurs and consumers. Even California liberals had the sense to reject state-level version of this legislation—the BASED Act—recognizing it as too extreme. It’s not often we say this, but Congress should follow California’s lead and defeat this version of the bill.”
