Former Virginia attorney general to focus on four pillars of AmFree’s advocacy including EU regulatory overreach, permanency of federal deregulatory gains, creep of socialism via progressive state attorneys generals & politicization of American businesses through woke agenda

Washington D.C.  – With the business community facing new regulatory challenges and socialism ascendant in American politics, the American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce (AmFree Chamber) announced former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares as its honorary chairman. Miyares joins AmFree Chamber’s existing leadership, which includes former Attorney General Bill Barr as Chairman of the Center For Legal Action’s Advisory Board, and U.S. Ambassador Terry Branstad, who becomes chairman emeritus of AmFree Chamber.

“The American Free Enterprise system has provided more hope, opportunity and prosperity than any economic system in the history of the world. Sadly, it is under assault — from foreign regulators, domestic administrators and political leaders who believe they know better than the American people and the businesses that built this country,” said Miyares, who served as the 48th Attorney General of Virginia from 2022-2026. “Whether it’s the Biden administration’s regulatory avalanche or the European Union’s brazen attempt to impose its rules on American companies, the threat is real and the stakes couldn’t be higher. My family fled Cuba because socialism destroys everything it touches — opportunity, dignity, and freedom. I’ve seen what happens when government becomes the enemy of the people it’s supposed to serve, and I refuse to let that happen here. As Attorney General of Virginia, I fought federal overreach every single day because someone has to. AmFree Chamber is doing exactly that — and I’m proud to join that fight. The American Miracle is worth defending.”

As the only trade association in the United States with legal standing to formally challenge European Union regulations seeking to impose a global minimum tax on American companies, AmFree Chamber has been fighting for U.S. businesses that have no seat at the EU’s table but bear the full cost of its mandates.

In his role as Honorary Chairman, Miyares will focus on four critical battlefronts:

  1. Pushing back against the EU’s aggressive and extraterritorial regulatory regime that threatens to impose foreign rules on American businesses;
  2. Dismantling the federal administrative state’s unchecked expansion of regulatory power over American job creators, and providing permanence to recent deregulatory gains;
  3. Advancing free market legislation at the state level to counter the creeping tide of government intervention and socialism led by progressive attorney generals and former Federal Trade Commissioner (FTC) Lina Khan;
  4. Fighting the politicization of American business through ESG mandates and woke corporate governance agendas that put ideology ahead of performance and shareholder value.

“In four short years, AmFree Chamber has stopped harmful policies, shaped national conversations and achieved landmark legal victories against the egregious overreach of the Biden years,” added Gentry Collins, AmFree Chamber CEO. “The rise of democratic socialism is a global phenomenon and five-alarm fire calling for a full-scale response to preserve America’s superpower status as the last, best hope on earth. Dating back to the 1700s, Virginia has a long and storied history of standing up to European overreach, and we are thrilled to have one of the Commonwealth’s bright young stars join our team to provide full-scale support for a business community and free enterprise system facing new threats every day.”

As the first Hispanic American and first child of an immigrant elected to statewide office in the Commonwealth, Miyares served as a prosecutor in Virginia Beach before being elected to the Virginia House of Delegates and later Attorney General in 2022.

Among AmFree Chamber’s notable victories to date include:

  • Healthcare: Led national momentum on Pharmacy Benefits Managers (PBM) reform, challenged 340B expansion, stopped Prescription Drug Affordability Boards (PDAB) price control efforts
  • Financial Services: defeated interchange fee price controls at state levels, opposed restrictive Federal Reserve capital rules that limit lending and growth, challenged SEC overreach on data and ESG mandates
  • Energy: Filed and supported dozens of legal challenges to EV mandates and climate rules, influenced federal rulemaking across Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy (DOE), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
