In 1976, during his run for Governor of Vermont, Sen. Bernie Sanders put his socialist views bluntly: “I favor the public ownership of utilities, banks and major industries.” Fast forward half a century, a new class of socialists is not only articulating a similar world view, but as members of Congress, are also introducing bills seeking to make these policies law.

The American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce (AmFree Chamber) believes that our free market system of capitalism has made our economy and country the envy of the world. We believe socialism poses a profound threat to American liberty, free markets, and individual prosperity.

To combat socialism’s spread, AmFree Chamber is launching Socialism Watch. We will highlight legislation advancing the goals of socialists, draw attention to the legislators championing socialist causes, and demonstrate how these efforts will erode the foundations of our economy and freedoms.

Legislative Watch

AmFree Chamber has identified 32 bills introduced during the 119th Congress that demonstrate the anti-market policies being pushed by socialists in Congress. The bills below all fall into the following two categories:

1. Achieve the stated objectives documented in the DSA 2026 platform.
2. Sponsored by self-described socialists in Congress (Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, & Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez).

Note: These 32 bills do not represent the totality of socialist policies introduced in the 119th Congress. Far from it. These are the legislative vehicles that AmFree Chamber has identified as most perilous to our mission fighting for policies that will extend rather than extinguish the American experiment and ensure that future generations have ample opportunities marked by freedom and upward mobility.
